Alvin Dante Yarbrough was born in East Cleveland, Ohio. His earliest artistic influences were a pen and ink illustrated book, Andrew Henry's Meadow and his older brother who also is an artist.
Dante earned a BFA degree from Clark Atlanta University and currently runs his own studio in the historic West End of Atlanta. He has exhibited in solo and group shows in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, DC, Nashville and Arizona. His artwork has been commissioned by Clark Atlanta University, West Georgia University (Carrollton), Red Oak Community Center (Fulton County, Georgia), the City of Atlanta and HJ Russell & Company.
Collectors of the artist's work include Vanderbilt University (Department of African American Studies in the Diaspora), The Honorable Mayor Shirley Franklin, Ambassador Andrew Young, Atlanta's Chief of Police Richard Pennington, actor Tommy Ford (Martin, Who's Got Jokes?), television actress Anna Marie Horsford (Amen, The Wayans Brothers, Friday), noted best-selling author Nathan McCall (Makes Me Wanna Holla, Them), the America's Mart (Atlanta, GA), the Frank Ski Foundation, several entertainers and athletes.
His Absent Curriculum piece was awarded the 2008 Purchase Prize presented during the 14th Annual African American Art Exhibition in Louisville, Kentucky (jurored by artist/educator Kevin Cole). As a testament to his distinctive vision of art, Red Bull has partnered with Dante to create a limited edition of visual mixes which utilizes emerging audio and video technology. In 2008, Dante was named the featured artist for the 20th Anniversary of the National Black Arts Festival held in Atlanta, GA.
